Designing Adaptive Chatbots

Summary:
The capability to recognize and respond to human emotions, behavior, and characteristics is one of the greatest psychological needs of people and, thus one of the essentials in human-human communication. However, most chatbots do not realize if a user is pleased or displeased, making it impossible to react appropriately to any user states and characteristics. To solve this gap our research aims to address three key areas towards an adaptive chatbot design:

  1. Investigate mechanisms to make chatbots aware of user states and user characteristics
  2. Develop data-driven decision mechanism to understand and classify user variables
  3. Develop and evaluate affective chatbot reaction strategies
